November 2021 Q&A
Thank you for joining my Q&A! Please understand that without the opportunity to visit your yard or garden, I won’t be able to provide a complete answer but I will certainly do my best!
When is the best month/ time of year to transplant peony?
The best window to transplant peonies is after they’ve flowered and have browned over. This will depend on the species of peony and where you live. You can cut back the dead growth on the plants and at the same time relocate to where you’d like them to go. You should have a big window to do this because peonies generally have a very short flowering life, sometimes as short as a few weeks!
I have these on the side of my house. Don’t know the name. Two turned brown and died for some reason and I removed them. Any idea why they might keep dying?
This is a tough one without seeing your yard but it appears to me that this plant dried out. It looks like they might be in the Juniper family. This is odd given the other plants in the same bed seem to be perfectly healthy. I wonder if the water pattern has changed (perhaps a gutter change?) redirecting water away from this area? I would make sure the entire bed is getting enough water and go from there.
What’s the one thing I should do for my lawn before winter comes in New England?
I would try to get a fertilizer application down on your lawn before winter sets in. There are different goals for fall fertilizing than in the spring. A fall application should be lighter on nitrogen and heavier on phosphorous. Nitrogen promotes top growth which would be more suitable for the spring. In the fall, you want to target root health to have an overall healthier lawn when the spring comes.
What is Roger’s favorite kind of Christmas tree and why?
I’ve always been a fan of frasier firs when it comes to Christmas tree choice. They have good staying power and fill the house with a wonderful holiday fragrance! While many Christmas trees are sourced from our neighbors up in Canada, oddly enough North Carolina is one of the largest sources of frasier fir trees! When you’re out getting your tree, keep in mind that your tree was likely planted 5-7 years ago in order to get to a “market” size this year.
